Comforting Bible Verses to Help Cope with Grief and Loss

Losing a loved one is never easy, and it can be hard to find the right words to ease the pain. Here are some scriptures that may provide comfort during this difficult time.  Feel free to give a copy of this to someone to assist with bereavement of a loved one. You may want to write them on 3x5 cards and keep them with you because grief seems to know no boundaries.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.     Psalm 147:3

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.     Psalm 34:18

From the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I …     Psalm 61:2

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.      Isaiah 41:10

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. Revelation 21:4

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.   Jeremiah 29:11

As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem. Isaiah 66:13

He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom ...          

Isaiah 40:11

...The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.    

Isaiah 40:28-29

For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.      Psalm 22:24

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.       Psalm 23:4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.  2 Corinthians 1:3-4

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.       John 16:33

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.      Deuteronomy 31:6

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.     Psalm 46:1

For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.      Psalm 27:5

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.        Matthew 5:4

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.         Romans 8:28

He sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.        Job 5:11

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.          Romans 8:38-39

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns. Psalms 46:5

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.”        Isaiah 57:15

My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept.
